Cheering on FastK8

Didn’t I tell you to watch out for fastK8 (real name: Kate Grace)?! I forgot to tell you…I’m a psychic. Just kidding! But, anyways, she lived up to her twitter handle and placed 3rd in the Wanamaker Mile against a very competitive field. I think she finished in 4:28…which may have been what I ran a half mile in the other day. Looks like I won’t be changing my twitter handle to @fastMBS anytime soon…or ever.

[I did think I could change it to @mdslammer in May. Or maybe I’ll go back to my name. Or maybe I’ll just keep what I have.]

Much of the Oiselle NYC contingent plus Shanna, the Oiselle PR maven, went up to watch our shining star bird decked in fan club tees and trials hoodies. [Matching is totally cool.]

It was fairly awesome to see not only Kate’s performance (busting out of her bird egg-shell, if you will), but a bunch of other record-setting races as well. I will refer you to Flotrackfor better commentary on that, as my track knowledge is slim to none.

As I was walking home last night from the meet, I couldn’t help but notice all the glimmering lights of the NYC skyline. It’s hard not to. I’ve lived here for 8.5 years and NYC at nighttime always makes me feel inspired (and I’m not even a night owl). I started to think about what is was I liked so much about NYC and why I’ve stayed here for so long even when I’ve moaned and groaned about the MTA, the exorbitant cost of living, the weather, the lack of nature, and so on and so forth.

I think it’s because in NYC, all of your dreams seem real. NYC has the best, brightest, and most innovative in people in, well, most everything…and I think a lot of people’s dreams center around some sort of “best” or unique or innovative or some other similar adjective. Here, you can see what it is that you want and how to get there. Someone here has probably lived something akin to your wildest dreams so actually being able to live your wildest dreams doesn’t seem so, well, wildly impossible. [A lot of wilds in that sentence.]

I don’t dream of being “the best.” But, I dream of being my best at this, that, and the other. NYC makes my dreams tangible.

Wait, I think there is a song about this. Something about a concrete jungle where dreams are made of or something.

So, I guess these really aren't original thoughts are they?

I think that’s another reason we like watching professional sports. Although most of us know we will never achieve what professionals do in terms of times, titles, winnings, etc, seeing their hard work pay off makes it seem like it might for us, too.

Before I go, just to cover my bases, I’ll probably continue to complain about the MTA (“ughh, where is the train! why are there 16 million ppl on the 6 train!”), the cost of living in NYC (“rent is a fortune!”),  and how SoulCycle continues to both fill my soul and suck the soul of my bank account. But, I will always love NYC.

I was in a cranky mood this morning. Walked into SoulCycle - mood instantly lifted. I think the grapefruit candles must be laced with Prozac or something.

TELL ME: YOUR FAVORITE CITY? WHY YOU LIKE IT? WATCH MILLROSE?

Until next time…

  1. Honey it is the smile, it could charm the bird out of the trees. Did you see the two little sister marathoners who compete with adults, they where so cute.

  2. Love this post and your tribute to NYC. I feel the same way about SF… For me, it was a place where my hopes and dreams could flourish. I don’t quite feel the same way about my new home, Cleveland… But it’s growing on me. May your remaining time in NYC be joyful, and may you end up in another great city for residency! 🙂

  3. They replayed Millrose on ESPN on Sunday night, so I recorded it/watched. And saw Kate! So fast. And Mary Cain? I want to be you, except I’m too old for that.

I do love NYC, although sometimes I do wish people and their dreams would all calm down a little bit. XANAX FOR EVERYONE.
